What Does Professional Lighting Installation Include?
Professional lighting installation covers everything from replacing a single pendant fitting to designing and wiring a complete lighting scheme for your entire property. It includes recessed downlights, pendant lights, wall lights, under-cabinet lighting, exterior spotlights, garden path lighting, and decorative feature lighting.
Modern LED lighting uses a fraction of the energy of traditional halogen and incandescent bulbs — typically 80–90% less. A full LED conversion across a 3-bedroom house can save £100–£200 per year on electricity bills while providing better quality light in every room.
Lighting design is not just about placing fittings on a ceiling. It is about understanding how light affects a space — task lighting for work surfaces, ambient lighting for living areas, accent lighting for architectural features, and functional lighting for safety and security.
Lambourn Electrical Services designs and installs lighting for homes and businesses across Crawley, Horsham, Redhill, Reigate, and the wider Surrey and Sussex area. Whether you want a few new downlights in your kitchen or a complete lighting redesign, we handle the full process from design to installation.

Why Poor Lighting Costs You More Than You Think
A dark kitchen with a single central fitting creates shadows on every worktop. You end up chopping vegetables in your own shadow, straining your eyes, and accepting a space that feels smaller and less functional than it actually is. Task lighting over worktops solves this instantly.
Old halogen downlights generate significant heat and consume 50W each. A kitchen with 8 halogen downlights draws 400W continuously. Replace them with 5W LEDs and you cut that to 40W — a 90% reduction. Over a year, across every room, those savings are substantial.
Poorly lit exteriors are a security risk. A dark driveway, unlit path, or shadowed entrance makes your property a more attractive target for opportunistic burglars. Motion-activated exterior lighting is one of the most effective and affordable security measures available.
Bathrooms with incorrect lighting create compliance risks. BS 7671 defines specific zones in bathrooms where only certain types of fittings and wiring methods are permitted. Incorrectly specified bathroom lighting is not just a regulatory failure — it is a genuine shock hazard in a wet environment.
Our Lighting Installation Process
Consultation & Design
We visit your property, discuss what you want to achieve, and recommend a lighting scheme. We consider room function, natural light, ceiling type, and your budget.
Product Selection
We help you choose fittings that match your style and requirements. We source from professional lighting suppliers — not big-box retail — so you get quality, longevity, and proper warranty support.
Installation
We install all fittings, run any new cables, add dimmer switches where specified, and connect everything to your consumer unit with proper circuit protection.
Testing & Commissioning
Every circuit is tested to BS 7671 standards. Dimmer switches are calibrated, timers are set, and exterior lighting is aimed and adjusted for optimal coverage.
Handover
We walk you through the controls, explain dimmer operation and timer settings, and provide certification for any notifiable work.

Lighting Types, Technologies & Applications
Recessed downlights are the most popular lighting upgrade in modern homes. We install fire-rated LED downlights with IC (insulation contact) ratings, meaning they can be safely covered by loft insulation without overheating. Standard sizes are 68mm and 83mm cutouts, with colour temperatures typically ranging from 2700K (warm white) to 4000K (cool white).
Under-cabinet lighting in kitchens provides task illumination directly onto worktops, eliminating shadows cast by overhead fittings. We use slim LED strip or individual LED puck lights, wired into the lighting circuit (not plug-in adaptors) for a clean, permanent installation.
Exterior lighting includes wall-mounted security lights, soffit downlights, garden spike lights, bollard path lighting, and decorative wall washers. All exterior fittings must have an IP rating appropriate to their location — typically IP44 minimum for sheltered areas and IP65 for exposed positions.
Bathroom lighting follows strict zoning rules defined in BS 7671. Zone 0 (inside the bath/shower) requires IPX7 fittings at SELV (12V). Zone 1 (above the bath/shower to 2.25m) requires IPX4 minimum. Zone 2 (0.6m beyond Zone 1) requires IPX4 minimum. All bathroom circuits must have 30mA RCD protection.
Dimming LED lighting requires compatible LED drivers and dimmer switches. Not all LED bulbs are dimmable, and not all dimmer switches work with LEDs. We specify trailing-edge dimmers designed for LED loads, which provide smooth, flicker-free dimming across the full range.
Smart lighting systems (such as Philips Hue, LIFX, or hard-wired systems like Rako and Lutron) add app control, scheduling, and scene-setting. We install the wiring infrastructure and smart switches, configure the system, and hand it over ready to use.
For period properties, we install decorative pendant fittings, wall sconces, and picture lights that complement the architecture. We source fittings from specialist suppliers and can work with fittings provided by the homeowner, provided they meet safety standards.
